Yard to the Post @ Golden Pendant Day
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 26 September 2015
The racing day started with the news that we had lost one of the world’s most prolific staying stallions in Zabeel, his blood-lines influencing many Carnival stars in the last two decades.
A timely win by the hugely talented mare AMELIE’S STAR, who is bred from a Zabeel broodmare, showed the quality of his progeny, which includes the great Octagonal, Lonhro and Pierro.
The feature $400,000 Golden Pendant was taken out by PEEPING, who caused a boilover as Sydney’s glamour mare CATKINS only battled in midfield after starting 'odds-on'. Ron Quinton’s mare returned from a bout of cardiac arrhythmia last start and got the better of the tough TWO BLUE in a two horse war down the straight.
In the other feature race, the Shannon Stakes, Godolphin's free-striding VASHKA enjoyed the step out to 1,500 metres to fight off all challengers. Young jockey Sam Clipperton bringing up a rare feature Group 2 winning double.
And earlier in the day, classy colt PRESS STATEMENT put in an impressive trial for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas in a fortnights time. It was a “painless” ride by jockey Hugh Bowman as the valuable son of Hinchinbrook toyed with his rivals, stamping his authority after a luckless run in the Golden Rose.
Racing started on a SOFT 5 surface after some morning rain and was upgraded to a GOOD 4 after Race 4.
A full race-by-race review will be available Sunday at 9am.

MR ONE ELEVEN swoops home out wide
In The Yard
MR ONE ELEVEN can sustain a surging run. HERNE'S OAK is genuine. PIAMIMI has power.
In The Running
HERNE'S OAK flew the gates, however handed up the lead to LOOPHOLE which crossed to hold out NAZIR. FOUR CARAT then made a move to inject some pace into the race. MR ONE ELEVEN was restrained early.
The Result
NAZIR (4th) was full of running and hit the front 200m from home, before being claimed out wider by MR ONE ELEVEN (1st) and DANCE OF HEROES (2nd) who both finished best down the middle. HERNE'S OAK (3rd) finished well back along the inside.
The Interest
A patient ride by Josh Parr aboard MR ONE ELEVEN was evident as all the action was unfolding up the front with the muddling tempo. John Seargent's fresh type of stayer enjoys his racing spaced apart, and that will be the plan going forward in this grade. DANCE OF HEROES challenged gamely to the line after enjoying a midfield run, while HERNE'S OAK finished off well along the inside after being held up for clear running until the 200m. Early leader LOOPHOLE was one-paced and could not quicken, while SCHERZOSO did not obtain clear running in the straight and could not be tested. Forgive HERNE'S OAK, SCHERZOSO and DANCE OF HEROES.

PRESS STATEMENT looks a likely Caulfield Guineas type
In The Yard
RAGEESE a little on toes. PRESS STATEMENT and SHARDS relaxed. MAN OF HIS WORD fit enough.
In The Running
RAGEESE rolled forward to lead at a Fair Tempo from WINNING ACCORD and SHARDS in behind. The favourite PRESS STATEMENT was a further 2L behind one off the fence.
The Result
PRESS STATEMENT (1st) got going on the turn, moved up and put the race away quickly. SHARDS (2nd) chased the winner gamely in a spirited performance, while early leader RAGEESE (3rd) faded after setting the pace.
The Interest
PRESS STATEMENT toyed with his rivals, and stamped himself as a major player in the Caulfield Guineas in a fortnight. It was a confident ride by stand-in jockey Hugh Bowman, as he gave a little click to be in touch with them on the turn. The small field helped as he got into nice rhythm which did not occur in the Golden Rose. Chris Waller is now not confused after last start and whispers from Waller suggest jockey Tye Angland will be back on in time. RAGEESE went to the front under different tactics today, however this backfired as he failed to finish the race off. It was a better run from SHARDS who chased gamely to the line. Follow PRESS STATEMENT.

AMELIE'S STAR has progressed through the grades
In The Yard
KINGDOMS has come on in fitness. BOHEMIAN LILY fit enough. REIGNING a real staying type. SASENKILE toned muscle.
In The Running
RIO PERDIDO worked forward to cross BOHEMIAN LILY to set a Fair Tempo, leading out from KING KINSHASA (raced keenly) and TREMEC. KINGDOMS and REIGNING were restrained early. KING KINSHASA was slow to begin.
The Result
KING KINSHASA (4th) was the first one to get going making a move around the turn, however AMELIE’S STAR (1st) was working into the race on his back and powered away over the concluding stages. BOHEMIAN LILY (2nd) stuck on ok from on pace, while the leader RIO PERDIDO dropped out to run last. REIGNING (3rd) was the best from the back, weaving through up the middle of the track.
The Interest
AMELIE’S STAR forged to the lead out wide and the race was over in a flash as a new rising star in the staying ranks was unearthed. In what has been a progressive campaign, a maiden led to two benchmark wins, and now some all important black type. However it was the adaptability shown after winning on pace last start and her turn of foot that is most promising as she put away some older, more seasoned campaigners with ease. She will be a force to be reckoned with in the autumn and has lots of maturing to do. BOHEMIAN LILY was 3 ¼ lengths in arears, and showed toughness sticking on from on pace. REIGNING made good ground late as he always does. KING KINSHASA over raced, loomed up, but was a tired horse on the line. SASENKILE got the better of KINGDOMS after racing tightly out wide in the straight. Follow AMELIE’S STAR. Forgive SASENKILE.

Alart sprinted to win after racing wide throughout
In The Yard
FLAMBOYANT LASS strong and athletic. ALART a lovely type. LOOK TO THE STARS & DENPURR relaxed.
In The Running
ALPINA crossed from the outside to lead the favourite FLAMBOYANT LASS at a STEADY tempo. ALART was posted wide with no cover as was LOOK TO THE STARS. ITALY had a nice run in behind the speed on the rails. GONE TO PARIS missed start (2L), while DENPURR was slow to begin.
The Result
ALART (1st) was too strong on the line after racing wide throughout, defeating FLAMBOYANT LASS (2nd) who never gave up in the run to the line. OCEAN TEMPEST (3rd) got chopped out at the 150m mark and got going late.
The Interest
ALART did a nice job after racing wide without cover. She settled better without the blinkers and sprinted to win, a lovely type of filly with scope to progress. OCEAN TEMPEST got squeezed out at the 300m mark at a vital stage and picked up late. WAY TOO GOOD sliced her way through nearer the inside which was not the place to be. TREMEZZINA was hooked wide into the straight and ran on well, as did DENPURR which rattled home from well back, both finishing within a length of the winner. Follow ALART. Forgive OCEAN TEMPEST, GONE TO PARIS and LOOK TO THE STARS (bled in one nostril).

VANBRUGH gives Bowman a double
In The Yard
DEVIL HAWK has a big stride. VANBURGH fit and coat shining. MAN OF CHOICE relaxed. BATTLE OF HASTINGS grinding type
In The Running
CLASH OF CLANS made the running and strung the field out from INTREPID WAY at a STRONG tempo. MAVEN WIZ and OVER THE AIR took the sit off the speed. TATOOSH was restrained early. DEVIL HAWK missed the start (1L) and BATTLE OF HASTINGS jumped awkwardly.
The Result
CLASH OF CLANS (4th) pinched a big break into the straight, however VANBRUGH (1st) hooked widest turning and joined in the lead at the 200m. TATOOSH (2nd) worked home well from last getting the better of MAN OF CHOICE (3rd) over the concluding stages.
The Interest
VANBRUGH has really hit his straps as an emerging stayer after backing up strong win last start. Hugh Bowman brought up a double and always looked in control, dominant up to the 1,800m journey. Chris Waller has now got the one to beat into the Spring Champion Stakes in a fortnight, and it is hard to see this lot turning tables on him. After that… it could be the VRC Derby. TATOOSH keeps running great races without winning and was brave to the line while MAN OF CHOICE was momentarily held up round the turn, then followed the winner everywhere and boxed on ok. GOLD AMBITION and DEVIL HAWK both ran on fairly, however were never winning chances. Follow VANBRUGH.

PEEPING bounces back with a victory
In The Yard
AMANPOUR is a free-striding type, looks well. CATKINS forever relaxed. SLIGHTLY SWEET a leaner type. VERGARA has some power.
In The Running
TWO BLUE did what she does best and made the running from VERGARA with ARABIAN GOLD and PEEPING in behind. CATKINS drifted back after jumping nicely.
The Result
PEEPING (1st) joined TWO BLUE (2nd) at the 200m, and it was a two horse battle to the line with the former the strongest in the end. BERY DELICIOUS (3rd) was last on the turn and weaved through to finish well nearer the inside.
The Interest
PEEPING bounced back to her best after suffering cardiac arrhythmia last start at her first try over 1,400 metres. She relaxed nicely, sprinted when needed, and dug in to the line under a great ride from Sam Clipperton, who saluted for his old master, trainer Ron Quinton. Tough mare TWO BLUE knows how to fight, and she did just that, battling on well the whole straight in what turned out a leader dominated affair. Odds on favourite CATKINS had to be shaken up a little more than usual out wider and she didn’t respond. ARABIAN GOLD was the subject of a betting drift and was very one-paced in the straight, finishing a long last. Follow PEEPING.

VASHKA fends off plenty of challengers
In The Yard

In The Running
FOREIGN PRINCE rolled forward to set a FAIR TEMPO, from VASHKA which crossed. NINTH LEGION used the rail to enjoy a nice trail inside of FLAMINGO STAR. WOULDN’T IT BE NICE lacked early speed.
The Result
VASHKA (1st) hit the front at the top of the straight and pulled out plenty in the run to the line after being challenged from those out wider including GOD’S IN HIM (2nd). MESSENE (3rd) raced tightly over the concluding stages and ran on to just get the better of FLAMINGO STAR (4th).
The Interest
VASHKA clearly loves the 1,500 metres at Rosehill, winning his second time at the trip aided by a clever ride by jockey Sam Clipperton bringing up a Group 2 winning double. He increased the speed from the 600m, then was there to be beaten in the final furlong after being challenged from everywhere over the concluding stages, but they couldn’t quite pick him up. GOD’S IN HIM was up in grade and fought valiantly to the line, while MESSENE was much better back onto a drier track. Hugh Bowman had to stop riding FLAMINGO STAR when raced tight near the line. MORIARTY and I'M IMPOSING were both warming up late after being let flat footed when they sprinted. Follow VASHKA and GOD’S IN HIM.

MUSIC MAGNATE was strong to the line
In The Yard
GOOD PROJECT has come on again in the coat. WINE TALES fit and ready. MUSIC MAGNATE a little on toes (however not as much as usual).
In The Running
DARCIWOOD pushed forward from a wide gate to lead NEVAGOTAVOTE at a Fair Tempo with HARRY HOTSPUR in behind. The favourite GOOD PROJECT was wide early and strode up mid race. TESTASHADOW missed the start (2L), while SOMETHING SECRET over raced in the middle stages.
The Result
MUSIC MAGNATE (1st) sat wide with cover and followed GOOD PROJECT (2nd) everywhere. He was stronger to the line in the end, edging away in the closing stages. TESTASHADOW (3rd) missed the start and finished off well nearer the inside.
The Interest
MUSIC MAGNATE, under the urgings of jockey Brenton Avdulla was strongest to the line, as he saw Hugh Bowman go forward on GOOD PROJECT, and got the cart into the race. The recipe for the win started in the mounting yard where he traditionally loses himself, however the cooler day helped as he was only a little on toes. GOOD PROJECT has clearly come back well after sustaining a wide run throughout, over racing in the middle stages. BALLET SUITE finished off the race well down the outside and will press on to longer races. WINE TALES was held up passing the 200m and finished off ok along the inside. Follow BALLET SUITE (over longer). Forgive GOOD PROJECT.
