Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 23 January 2021

Firm and fast conditions with the rail out nine metres helped on-pace runners today at Royal Randwick, five of the ten winners leading all the way.

The afternoon started with a successful market move, two-year-old Extreme Choice colt STAY INSIDE stalking the leaders and surging clear late to win by 2.8 lengths after getting heavily-backed in the final minutes before the jump. Waterhouse-Bott stayer SACRAMENTO produced the other big win of the day, rolling along in the lead and giving nothing else a chance as the $3.6 favourite of Race 6 over 2000 metres.

It was a big Quaddie dividend for those who found the winners of the later races, LE LUDE ($10), INVINCIANO ($16) and SOLDIER OF LOVE ($21) joining the popular winner of the Carrington Stakes BANDERSNATCH ($2.5 fav'). The Quaddie payout in NSW was $14,571.60.

A review of the day is provided below.

Race 1 THE PAUL HOFFMAN HANDICAP

fair tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Stay Inside Michael Freedman Robbie Dolan 7 57.5
2 Headliner Chris Waller James McDonald 3 55.5
3 Ashema Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald Tommy Berry 19 57.0

The Interest

The leaders CHAMELEON CHOICE and SCARZEL didn't give a yelp here, but the tempo wasn't too strong (FAIR) and the bias was in their favour. STAY INSIDE well-backed and clearly a very talented type. ASHEMA (wide), MISTAKEN IDENTITY (10th, very wide) and HARLEM GROOVE (12th, very wide) all covered extra ground. HEADLINER (2nd) and MANDALONG CASH (4th, held up) both surging late and could enjoy further. The time probably in the 60 to 65 range against the older horses.

Race 2 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP

strong tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Art Cadeau Terry Robinson Tommy Berry 3 61.0
2 Water Dove Brett Cavanough Ms Rachel King 5 54.0
3 Shelby Sixtysix Danny Williams James McDonald 2 57.5

Race 3 TAB HIGHWAY HANDICAP

strong tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 The First Of May Cody Morgan Tommy Berry 1 56.5
2 Katgully Red Jenelle Butler Ms Kathy O'Hara 2 55.5
3 Southern Appeal Danny Williams Hugh Bowman 9 57.5

Race 4 ANZ BLOODSTOCK NEWS HANDICAP

steady tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 The Face Tony Ball James Innes Jnr 4 54.0
2 Osamu Tony Gollan Tommy Berry 1 55.0
3 Emanate James Cummings Ms Rachel King 8 58.0

The Interest

THE FACE got an easy mid-race section and was too strong. Decent runs from first-up horses OSAMU and EMANATE (wide). VALAQUENTA (very wide, 6th 4.7L) went well enough without luck. REMOVAL (8th) pulled up with some vet issues. The time only OK given the steadier tempo. Some proven form-lines enough to put this as a STANDARD rating race to start off.

Race 5 BOWERMANS COMMERCIAL FURNITURE HANDICAP

fair tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Rocketing By David Pfieffer Hugh Bowman 1 56.0
2 Rule Of Law Bjorn Baker Kerrin McEvoy 6 56.0
3 Orpheum Ron Quinton Sam Clipperton 7 54.0

The Interest

A bunched finish, an average time and some mixed form-lines already out of this race, it looks like it will rate BELOW STANDARD. Despite that, there should be upside for the tough RULE OF LAW and winner ROCKETING BY up in distance. SUPERT EFFORT wide and not at his best today.

Race 6 HEINEKEN HANDICAP

steady tempo : long sprint
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Sacramento Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Sam Clipperton 9 57.0
2 New Arrangement Chris Waller James McDonald 4 57.0
3 Kiss the Bride Andrew Dale Joshua Parr 5 58.0

The Interest

The perfect ride from Clipperton on SACRAMENTO, who was dominant winning once again and should be better again over further. Rating the winner ABOVE STANDARD (+3L) and the rest of the pack STANDARD to start with. NEW ARRANGEMENT wouldn't have won, but coming 3W NC on the turn when it was a LONG SPRINT home wasn't ideal.

Race 7 SKY RACING ACTIVE HANDICAP

fair tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Le Lude John Thompson Ms Rachel King 6 53.5
2 Ulysses Julius Sandhu Chris Williams 8 59.5
3 Outback Diva Michael Freedman Kerrin McEvoy 7 57.5

The Interest

LE LUDE is a great fresh mare and she proved it again here. ST COVET'S SPIRIT (held up badly, 7th) was very unlucky though, never getting clear in the box seat. The time OK and some well-exposed form. A STANDARD rating race.

Race 8 FUJITSU GENERAL CARRINGTON STAKES

fair tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Bandersnatch Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 2 54.0
2 Quackerjack Mark Newnham Joshua Parr 10 59.0
3 Thy Kingdom Come John Thompson Ms Rachel King 1 53.0

The Interest

BANDERSNATCH and QUACKERJACK strong here in time that looked about STANDARD for the grade. ORDER AGAIN, SIKANDARABAD (7th) and even HERENGAWE (on heels late, 10th) not bad considering they all want more ground. CHAT was flushed out at the 550m mark and was only plain late.

Race 9 TAB HANDICAP

fair tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Invinciano Joseph Pride Brenton Avdulla 13 58.0
2 Game Of Thorns Kris Lees Hugh Bowman 3 58.5
3 Helga Les Bridge Chris Williams 12 59.0

The Interest

Avdulla took control and INVINCIANO was suited on the firmer ground with some ON-PACE bias. Lots of unlucky runners though back in the pack, including BOWERY BREEZE (8th 2.7L), who was held up badly again. SELICA (4th 2.1L) didn't find much room too. A STANDARD time with lots of depth in the form.

Race 10 DRINKWISE MILE

steady tempo
Bias: on-pace , rails-6w in straight

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Soldier of Love Kelvin Bourke Joshua Parr 12 58.0
2 Betcha Flying Chris Waller James McDonald 11 55.0
3 All Time Legend Les Bridge Kerrin McEvoy 1 59.0

The Interest

SOLDIER OF LOVE got control of a STEADY tempo and got the job done. ALL TIME LEGEND held up through and should have won, while CISCO BAY (4th) was very good after a wide run. Hard to rate the time, starting with a STANDARD rating for the form.
