Yard to the Post | Coolmore Classic Day

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 13 March 2021

The forecast rain didn't come and the track was surprisingly firm for Coolmore Classic Day. That concerned Queensland trainer Tony Gollan, who thought his in-form mare KRONE (picture) was a much better chance on soft ground. In the end it didn't stop her though as Tim Clark guided the flying five-year-old through a needle-eye gap to run down the very game MIZZY and win the Group 1 feature. Unfortunately for the Freedman stable their filly FORBIDDEN LOVE ($5 fav') was blocked and never got her chance in 12th.

On a sometimes frustrating day for punters a trio of short-priced Godolphin runners were sunk in other races; INGRATIATING ($2.8 fav') ran 5th in the Group 2 Pago Pago, COLETTE ($1.85 fav') could only manage 4th in the Group 3 Sky High and CRIADERAS ($2.4 fav') was very dissapointing in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes.

A full review of the day is provided below.

Race 1 CATANACHS HANDICAP

steady tempo
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Welsh Legend Robert & Luke Price James McDonald 8 57.5
2 Kiss the Bride Andrew Dale Joshua Parr 12 61.5
3 Toscanini Ciaron Maher Tom Marquand 14 57.0

In The Yard

WELSH LEGEND paraded well third-up and enjoys a dry Rosehill track. TOSCANINI also looked well, but is a bit one-paced. GREAT HOUSE getting very hot in the yard again.

The Interest

A better run from KISS THE BRIDE in 2nd, but this race was all about the perfectly prepared WELSH LEGEND, who loved the conditions. TOSCANINI very honest, he just lacks the acceleration of a top class galloper. GREAT HOUSE just fair and Waller suggested he is off for a spell now.

Race 2 CERRONE MAGIC NIGHT STAKES

steady tempo
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Arcaded James Cummings James McDonald 7 55.5
2 Jamaea Robert & Luke Price Tommy Berry 5 55.5
2 Robodira Geoff Duryea Brenton Avdulla 4 55.5

In The Yard

ARCADED the most relaxed filly in the yard on a warm day. ROBRIDA looked OK too, a touch warm. Not many standing out in the yard.

The Interest

ARACADED settled outside the lead and was simply too good. CENTRO STORICO (5th 3.7L) (tightened, blocked 150m) perhaps could have challenged for 2nd if she got even luck. Not one of the stronger black-type 2YO races and the form may be weaker.

Race 3 BOWERMANS COMMERCIAL FURNITURE PAGO PAGO STAKES

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Shaquero Chris Waller Kerrin McEvoy 2 55.5
2 Tiger Of Malay Michael Freedman Joshua Parr 14 55.5
3 Mazu Joseph Pride Andrew Adkins 1 55.5

In The Yard

MAZU looked well in the yard. SHAQUERO improving into his prep. No clear negatives.

The Interest

SHAQUERO has made a habit of improving sharply into his prep and he did it again here. Big runs from TIGER OF MALAY, MAZU (held up), WITH YOUR BLESSING, INGRATIATING, HILAL and CONVERGE (stuck wide) though too. AWE was a touch green on debut and found the line well late midfield. They ran 0.32 seconds faster than the fillies, but they didn't come home as quick the final 600m.

Race 4 BISLEY WORKWEAR SKY HIGH STAKES

slow tempo : long sprint
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Toffee Tongue Chris Waller Tom Marquand 2 56.0
2 Spirit Ridge Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald Robbie Dolan 5 55.5
3 Mirage Dancer Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young Nash Rawiller 3 58.0

In The Yard

MUSTAJEER paraded well, but he is a horse that usually prefers wet. Most others looking OK. COLETTE a touch warm in the yard.

The Interest

SPIRIT RIDGE got the favours in the lead, the class of TOFFEE TONGUE proving just enough to get the prize late. We learnt for sure that COLETTE (4th 1L) is a wet tracker. SHRAAOH (5th 1.4L) ran well considering he was poorly treated at Set Weights.

Race 5 CITY TATTERSALLS CLUB MAURICE McCARTEN STAKES

strong tempo
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 California Zimbol Peter & Paul Snowden Kerrin McEvoy 5 54.0
2 Easy Eddie Joseph Pride Robbie Dolan 2 58.0
3 Order of Command Danny O'Brien James McDonald 6 59.0

In The Yard

CALIFORNIA ZIMBOL a big strong mare that looked fit enough (90%) and is suited to a dry Rosehill. ORDER OF COMMAND a big strong type in the yard, he looked quiet and wasn't fully striding out. WANDABAA fit and ready to go.

The Interest

ALBUMIN settled outside CALIFORNIA ZIMBOL in the run, but she managed to get clear and arrived just in time. WANDABAA very good from the back and is one to follow this prep. PRIME CANDIDATE (6th 4.5L) had to do too much work early on a hot speed and could be worth forgiving second-up.

Race 6 CHANDON PHAR LAP STAKES

strong tempo
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Hungry Heart Chris Waller James McDonald 8 54.5
2 The Irishman Mark Newnham Joshua Parr 5 56.5
3 Impecunious Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young Glen Boss 4 54.5

In The Yard

POLAND a nice big strong type looking well. YALETOWN also with strength, both tough on-pacers.

The Interest

POLAND (5th 2.4L) was keen for McEvoy and the swooper HUNGRY HEART pounced late after everything was set up for her. IMPECUNIOUS was tightened and ran well. You can forgive POLAND next start.

Race 7 COOLMORE CLASSIC

fair tempo : long sprint
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Krone Tony Gollan Tim Clark 1 57.0
2 Mizzy Anthony Cummings Regan Bayliss 15 58.0
3 Dame Giselle Peter & Paul Snowden Robbie Dolan 16 51.0

In The Yard

MIZZY looking well on the back-up. DAME GISELLE a wet track type suited here. CHAILLOT a lovely type that has travelled up well from Melbourne. EMERALDS with a dusty coat and a touch light on condiiton.

The Interest

KRONE is simply flying. She came into this with 2 wins from 21 starts on dry tracks and 3 wins from 4 on wet so it was surprising how strong the win was. MIZZY and DAME GISELLE both high class on dry tracks. VANGELIC (4th 1.9L) (blocked 300m) had some bad luck, as did SUBPOENAED (7th 3.8L) (stuck wide) and the favourite FORBIDDEN LOVE (12th 4.9L) (blocked 300m, blocked 100m). The Melbourne mares CHAILLOR (11th 4.8L) and RICH HIPS (9th 4.6L) back in hopeless spots on the turn.

Race 8 HYLAND RACE COLOURS AJAX STAKES

steady tempo : long sprint
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 I Am Superman Peter & Paul Snowden Kerrin McEvoy 9 56.5
2 Think It Over Kerry Parker Glen Boss 3 58.0
3 Rock Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Tommy Berry 6 56.5

In The Yard

Most horses looking fine, CRIADERAS shining in the coat. BUFFALO RIVER a more athletic type that may have preferred wet.

The Interest

I AM SUPERMAN loves Rosehill and he got the lovely trail behind the leaders here. ROCK (3rd 0.9L) the other impressive run, sustaining his effort right to the line in preparation for the Doncaster.

Race 9 CELLARBRATIONS HANDICAP

strong tempo
Bias: on-pace

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Yao Dash Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Nash Rawiller 16 60.0
2 Starspangled Rodeo Bjorn Baker Joshua Parr 8 57.5
3 Lina's Hero Chris Waller Brenton Avdulla 4 57.0

In The Yard

On-pacers YAO DASH, STARSPANGLED RODEO and LINA'S HERO all looking well. MILK MAN a tough defined type perhaps not suited on a firm Rosehill track.

The Interest

Nash got YAO DASH to roll and used his toughness in a strong finish under hard riding. STARSPANGLED RODEO and LINA'S HERO both pretty good too, they went so hard the backmarkers had their chance. BULLFINCH (7th 3.8L) (stuck wide) one to follow into the prep for Waller.
