Yard to the Post | Golden Slipper Day

Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 27 March 2021

One of the best weight-for-age gallopers in the world ADDEYBB could not hold off the Kiwi dynamo VERRY ELLEEGANT (picture) in a thrilling Group 1 Ranvet Stakes today. James McDonald delivered a carefully planned ride, easing his mare into the race on the turn and only unleashing her sprint when he needed to.

McDonald said he had learnt a lesson from the 2020 Ranvet when ADDEYBB surprisingly fought back to beat VERRY ELLEEGANT after he pulled the ‘trigger’ a furlong too early.

In the main event the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained STAY INSIDE was too strong and professional for his Golden Slipper rivals. ANAMOE produced a rattling late finish from the back, but nothing else put up a fight in what was one of the more clear-cut Slipper finishes in recent years.

A full review from the yard to the post is provided below.

Race 1 IRRESISTIBLE POOLS & SPAS DARBY MUNRO STAKES

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Isotope Tony Gollan Ryan Maloney 7 56.5
2 Odeum Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) Michael Walker 1 58.0
3 Bella Nipotina Ciaron Maher Damien Oliver 6 56.5

In The Yard

Some were getting a touch warm in the weather. LORD OLYMPUS, MATCHMAKER and BELLA NIPOTINA (lack power) all in that category. ISOTOPE very well first-up and MARBOOSHA in great shape. ANDERMATT looking well third-up too.

The Interest

Two classy fillies fought this out, ISOTOPE ready to go first-up and ODEUM well-placed back in grade. Perhaps ODEUM the one with more upside going forward over 1400m to 1600m. BELLA NIPOTINA and MABOOSHA both very honest from nice spots near pace.

Race 2 XXXX N E MANION CUP

steady tempo : long sprint
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Favorite Moon William Haggas Kerrin McEvoy 1 53.0
2 Realm Of Flowers Anthony & Sam Freedman Damien Thornton 7 53.0
3 Sacramento Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Sam Clipperton 4 56.5

In The Yard

DADOOZDART, REALM OF FLOWERS, SELINO all looked well. COLLIDE getting fitter. MUSTAJEER, RAHEEN HOUSE, SKYMAX and SACRAMENTO all a touch warm. FAVOURITE MOON fit and well first-up.

The Interest

The Haggas stable had FAVORITE MOON looking perfect first-up and McEvoy joined in with a peach of a ride. A great effort from the import, but the best run of the race was clearly REALM OF FLOWERS (stuck wide), who will be a major player in the Sydney Cup. SELINO found the line well too and will relish the 3200m. SACREMENTO rock solid as always.

Race 3 ROADWORK SOLUTIONS EPONA STAKES

fair tempo
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Polly Grey Chris Waller James McDonald 10 55.0
2 Aliferous Kris Lees Craig Williams 4 56.0
3 She's Ideel Ciaron Maher Jason Collett 2 54.0

In The Yard

SHE'S IDEEL looked fine without standing out in the yard. ATTENTION RUN fit and ready to go first-up, WELSH LEGEND very well (but a risk in conditions) and most others were OK.

The Interest

POLLY GREY got cover, a nice ride and her wet track to win. The best run in the race clearly SHE'S IDEEL after she lost momentum (held up 'til 200m) and surged hard late up the inside. LE LUDE (held up 'til 300m) and RONDINELLA (wide early) didn't get much luck too.

Race 4 RANVET STAKES

steady tempo : long sprint
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Verry Elleegant Chris Waller James McDonald 1 57.0
2 Addeybb William Haggas Tom Marquand 5 59.0
3 Angel of Truth Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes Kerrin McEvoy 2 59.0

In The Yard

ADDEYBB looked strong, fit and ready. VERRY ELLEEGANT also shining and COLETTE not as warm in the yard this time. SIR DRAGONET and MASTER OF WINE a touch on their toes and haven't quite settled into their prep yet.

The Interest

ADDEYBB was always under the pump and James McDonald delivered the perfect ride on VERRY ELLEEGANT to get the prize, stalking the pace and sprinting at the perfect moment. ANGEL OF TRUTH and SIR DRAGONET (pushed wide turn) both very solid too.

Race 5 SKY RACING ROSEHILL GUINEAS

fair tempo : long sprint
Bias: Fair

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Mo'unga Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald Tommy Berry 6 56.5
2 Sky Lab Paul Perry James McDonald 15 56.5
3 Montefilia Chris Waller Jason Collett 10 54.5

In The Yard

MO'UNGA looked well, a more athletic type than most. Proven G1 horses LION'S ROAR and MONTEFILIA also in good shape. The Kiwi MILFORD warm in the yard and perhaps hasn't travelled well.

The Interest

A testing tempo here with MO'UNGA and SKY LAB making very long runs out wide in a thrilling finish. Both horses have plenty of finishing strength and the filly MONTEFILIA couldn't get past them despite getting a nice trail behind. LION'S ROAR strong through the pack after getting tightened and KHOEKHOE was the best of the on-pacers. Enough promise in the top few runs to set up an exciting Derby in a couple of weeks time.

Race 6 THE AGENCY GEORGE RYDER STAKES

steady tempo
Bias: rails-6w

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Think It Over Kerry Parker Glen Boss 8 59.0
2 Dreamforce John Thompson James McDonald 2 59.0
3 Avilius James Cummings Nash Rawiller 6 59.0

In The Yard

Most of them looking fine in the yard, FUNSTAR just a bit warm for her. No standouts.

The Interest

A strange old race. THINK IT OVER and DREAMFORCE got dream inside runs while most jockeys went looking for wider ground, which wasn't any quicker on the day. Excuses for GEM SONG (wide from 550m), DALASAN (blocked 200m to 100m) and FUNSTAR (blocked 200m). AVILIUS and CASCADIAN both very good too.

Race 7 LONGINES GOLDEN SLIPPER

strong tempo
Bias: rails-6w

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Stay Inside Michael Freedman Tommy Berry 3 56.5
2 Anamoe James Cummings Ms Rachel King 16 56.5
3 Ingratiating James Cummings Damien Oliver 11 56.5

In The Yard

Both PROFITEER and STAY INSIDE looked particularly well in the yard. No clear negatives, ANAMOE looking a bit distracted, but holding condition just fine.

The Interest

Three runs of note in this years Golden Slipper. The winner STAY INSIDE the ultimate professional again, putting himself in the perfect spot and getting a break on the field that couldn't be overcome. ANAMOE did make a good fist of it though, charging home late from a hopeless position out the back. ARTORIUS the other run of note after never looking comfortable trailing the field, he only really focussed the final 200m and produced an impressive late surge. PROFITEER went way too hard and CAPTIVANT (blocked) should have finished a bit closer.

Race 8 BISLEY WORKWEAR GALAXY

strong tempo
Bias: rails-6w

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Eduardo Joseph Pride Nash Rawiller 5 57.0
2 Order of Command Danny O'Brien Craig Williams 11 53.5
3 Jonker Tony Gollan Tim Clark 2 53.0

In The Yard

The favourites all well in the yard; EDUARDO shining again, HAUT BRION HER looked fit and TAILLEUR in good shape. WILD RULER also well, but he is a young strong colt that isn't proven in the wet.

Race 9 TAB BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES

strong tempo
Bias: rails-6w

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Seasons Kylie Gavenlock Kerrin McEvoy 1 54.5
2 Tricky Gal Matthew Smith James McDonald 6 58.0
3 Wandabaa Kris Lees Jason Collett 17 55.0

In The Yard

An even yard. WANDABAA in good shape and suited to conditions, but the wide barrier is a risk. FANCIFUL DREAM a touch warm in the yard.
