Yard to the Post | Hobartville Stakes Day
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 18 February 2023
A blazing summer sun lit up Rosehill Gardens this afternoon for black-type racing ahead of the Autumn Carnival.
Most horses seemed to handle the steamy conditions and firm track well enough, but perhaps it was the weather that helped bring the demise of five short-priced favourites on the day.
Boom two-year-old KING’S GAMBIT ($2.5) was beaten again as favourite when finishing third to the impressive CYLINDER in the Group Two Silver Slipper Stakes before MARIAMIA ($1.8) was out-fought by ELECTRIC GIRL and EXPAT in the Group Two Millie Fox Stakes.
Tim Clark guided MARIAMIA home for a disappointing fourth, and the tough results continued for Clark with boom colt AFT CABIN (5th at $1.6), CROSS TALK (2nd at $1.85) and finally MIDWEST (2nd at $2.6) all getting beaten to make it a forgettable afternoon.

1 | Blood River | Danielle Seib | Regan Bayliss | 2 | 54.0 | |
2 | Preemptory | Danny Williams | Zac Lloyd | 18 | 57.5 | |
3 | Bon Frankie | Aaron Clarke | Tyler Schiller | 1 | 54.5 |
In The Yard
A hot summer afternoon in the Rosehill Gardens mounting yard and most of the Highway horses were sweating as expected, but all seemed to be handling the heat OK. ATMOSPHERIC ROCK forward in the yard first-up from a nine week let-up. SUPER EXTREME, SIZZLE MINIZZLE and SYRIAN STAR parading well with no knocks. BON FRANKIE a slighter type than most.
In The Running
INDICATIVE led at a FAIR tempo from DUTY with BLOOD RIVER in the box seat (3rd rails WC).
The Result
BLOOD RIVER (1st) got into the clear and fought hard to win from PREEMPTORY (2nd) charging home from the back. BON FRANKIE (3rd) followed the winner through and chased hard only 0.36L away at the finish.
The Interest
Most horses seemed to have their chance and the in-form stable Danielle Seib collected yet another win. She picked up BLOOD RIVER from the Robert and Luke Price stable before his current campaign and the 4YO son of Super One has won three times from six starts since. PREEMPTORY was a touch unlucky though and probably wins with clear running. BON FRANKIE ran well, especially considering he seems to be more of a wet track type. ATMOSPHERIC (6th) not far away and he pulled up with a poor recovery in the heat.
Race 2 MIDWAY HANDICAP

1 | Cheerful Legend | Nathan Doyle | Jason Collett | 18 | 58.5 | |
2 | Luvoir | Jason Attard & Lucy Keegan-Attard | Zac Lloyd | 15 | 55.5 | |
3 | Miracle Spin | Matthew Smith | Dylan Gibbons | 5 | 56.0 |
In The Yard
CALIFORNIA FIRE anxious in the yard, getting warm. LUVOIR parades much better for him today (can get warm and anxious). No knocks on CHEERFUL LEGEND and KIBOSH who both parade very well in the heat. THE FOSSIL and WHISKY WISDOM slighter than most and starting to get warm deeper into the yard. MIRACLE SPIN seemed to have some fitness improvement to come.
In The Running
CUBAN GRANCHICO went to the lead and get rolling before the turn to set a STRONG tempo. CAROLINA FIRE moved up on his outside and KIBOSH was out 3W NC on-pace. CHEERFUL LEGEND held together back in the field (12th 2W WC).
The Result
CHEERFUL LEGEND (1st) ran on best for a narrow win from LUVOIR (2nd) right in the finish and MIRACLE SPIN (3rd) wound up down the outside.
The Interest
This looked like a weaker form race on paper and the bunched finish suggests that's the way it may work out. CHEERFUL LEGEND got a nice ride and suitable tempo out the back. CAROLINA FIRE (6th) was brave on-pace after pushing up from the outside barrier. MIRACLE SPIN perhaps the horse to follow up in distance given he seemed to have some improvement to come in the yard. KIBOSH had a tough run and pulled up with a poor recovery.
Race 3 ACY SECURITIES HANDICAP

1 | Parisal | James Cummings | Zac Lloyd | 6 | 52.0 | |
2 | Insurrection | Michael Freedman | Brett Prebble | 3 | 54.0 | |
3 | Party For One | Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | Chad Schofield | 5 | 55.5 |
In The Yard
PARISAL handling the occasion well and hasn’t gone backwards between the runs. No knock on INSURRECTION and PARTY FOR ONE in the yard, both parading well. ECONOMICS and DUCHY OF SAVOY slightly anxious and getting warm deeper into the yard, ECONONMICS very unsettled in the barriers and scratched before they jumped. Melbourne mare HYPOTHETICAL a nice strong sprinting type that may have some fitness improvement to come.
In The Running
HYPOTHETICAL very fast early to lead at a FAIR tempo with PARISAL moving up on her outside and INSURRECTION in the box seat.
The Result
PARISAL (1st) kicked on to win best to beat INSURRECTION (2nd) chasing up the inside and PARTY FOR ONE (3rd) running on into a place.
The Interest
PARISAL and INSURRECTION had returned with dominant wins at the Kensington track and they backed that up with strong efforts today, PARISAL perhaps suited by getting into the ground off rails while INSURRECTION was dictated to in the box seat. PARTY FOR ONE keeps running well and deserves a win soon.
Race 4 FUJITSU GENERAL SILVER SLIPPER STAKES
fair tempo
Bias:

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Cylinder | James Cummings | Brenton Avdulla | 1 | 56.5 | |
2 | Platinum Jubilee | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 7 | 54.5 | |
3 | King's Gambit | Peter & Paul Snowden | Nash Rawiller | 4 | 56.5 |
In The Yard
Interesting 2YOs in the parade for the Silver Slipper. No knocks on CYLINDER, MUMBAI MUSE and FIRE LANE who all parade very well in the hot conditions. KING’S GAMBIT slightly better today, but still getting warm and anxious in the yard, up on his toes. PLATINUM JUBILEE a tiny bit unsettled too, but she looked very fit with a defined mid-strength frame.
In The Running
PLATINUM JUBILEE was urged to lead from CIRCULAR getting the trail and KING'S GAMBIT just a touch keen behind them in the 2W line. A FAIR tempo set up.
The Result
In a three-horse war down the length of the Rosehill Gardens straight CYLINDER (1st) wore down PLATINUM JUBILEE (2nd) with KING'S GAMBIT (3rd) not far away. A gap back to FIRE LANE (4th) who was beaten 5.4L.
The Interest
After a season of mixed performances the two-year-olds came alive in this race! PLATINUM JUBILEE so brave out in the lead and it took a very talented colt to run her down. CYLINDER should arguably be unbeaten to date (bias against on debut, held up last start) and he put it all together here from the inside barrier. No love lost for KING'S GAMBIT and MUMBAI MUSE was a forgive run after pulling up 3/5 lame.

1 | Lindermann | Chris Waller | Nash Rawiller | 10 | 56.0 | |
2 | Kokoro | John O'Shea & Tom Charlton | Brenton Avdulla | 5 | 56.5 | |
3 | Al Mah Haha | Tash Burleigh | Ms Amy McLucas | 2 | 57.5 |
In The Yard
An even bunch in the yard. SUPER PURSUIT well deep into his preparation. WILLINGA RUFIO appears fit enough first-up in the yard and handling the conditions, as does KOKORO. TAJNEED and NAVAJO PEAK not quite fit yet first-up into their preparations and appear they will need the run. No knocks on FEARNOUGHT and LINDERMANN who both parade OK.
In The Running
LINDERMANN jumped nicely and was taken to the lead by Nash Rawiller from WILLINGA RUFIO on his outside. Nash revved up the leader and set up a LONG SPRINT home.
The Result
LINDERMANN (1st) kicked best from KOKORO (2nd) and AL MAH HAHA (3rd) running on.
The Interest
LINDERMANN got control in the lead and the progressive colt delivered a big kick when asked, clearly enjoying the step up to 1400m at his home track. KOKORO chased OK from near pace and AL MAH HAHA ran on into a place. SUPER PURSUIT one-paced when they sprinted and disappointing. This is another race that may have questionable form going forward, perhaps the winner and NAVAJO PEAK (warm in yard, solid 4th) the horses to follow along with the grinding PIEROSSA, who wasn't suited at all. TAJNEED poor first-up and she laid in quite badly down the home straight.

1 | Electric Girl | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Zac Lloyd | 3 | 56.0 | |
2 | Expat | Joseph Pride | Tyler Schiller | 9 | 56.0 | |
3 | Roots | Chris Waller | Brenton Avdulla | 6 | 54.0 |
In The Yard
ELECTRIC GIRL parades fit first-up from a spell, a touch warm but nothing to be concerned about. MARIAMIA continues to parade well deep into her preparation. The long leggy PAVITRA a touch warm and fresh in the yard first-up. No knocks on ROOTS and EXPAT (thick-set, muscular) who both parade well first-up. KATALIN appears as though she will benefit with the run, but is handling the conditions well for her.
In The Running
EXPAT took up the running and got rolling into the turn (tempo FAIR : LONG SPRINT) with MARIAMIA moving up on her outside and ELECTRIC GIRL (3rd rails WC) in the box seat.
The Result
ELECTRIC GIRL (1st) knuckled down and ran down a brave EXPAT (2nd) with ROOTS (3rd) running on and MARIAMIA (4th).
The Interest
EXPAT always sets up an exciting race when she manages to find the lead, a brave front-runner that can sustain a long sprint which makes life tough for any horse on her outside. In this case it was the favourite MARIAMIA exposed with no cover on-pace and she couldn't finish the race off as expected after EXPAT had her off the bit chasing 500m from home. ELECTRIC GIRL a reliable dry track sprinter and everything went her way today. KATALIN poor and pulled up with vet issues (mild heat stress, poor recovery).
Race 7 PARRAMATTA CUP

1 | King Frankel | Mitchell Beer | Tyler Schiller | 8 | 53.0 | |
2 | Banju | Lyle Chandler | Kerrin McEvoy | 6 | 54.0 | |
3 | Sacramento | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Regan Bayliss | 2 | 57.0 |
In The Yard
No obvious knocks for the stayers in the yard, KING FRANKEL well first-up from a spell, a smaller athletic type that was handling the heat well. SACRAMENTO warm in the yard, but nothing unusual for him, similar to past parades in these conditions. BANJU and PARRY SOUND continue to parade well deep into their preparations, focused and walking out well. MOHICAN HEIGHTS a slighter type than most. SELINO appeared as though he will need the run early in his preparation.
In The Running
BANJU took up the running with KING FRANKEL in a controlling spot a couple of lengths off in the 2W line and SACRAMENTO behind him. They backed off the tempo mid-race and made it a sprint home from the turn.
The Result
KING FRANKEL (1st) kept chasing to run down BANJU (2nd) late with SACRAMENTO (3rd) sticking on well.
The Interest
The two on-pacers that were hard in the market controlled this race, which looked the likely result once the Waterhouse Bott gallopers couldn't get forward to put the pressure on. KING FRANKEL clearly a stayer with upside that should keep performing as he steps up in distance this campaign. Perhaps the only niggle is that he keeps finding races that lack tempo, a trend that should end soon as the races get bigger in Autumn Carnival. The grinding SACRAMENTO is going well this prep and can go close next start if he finds the lead.

1 | Osipenko | Chris Waller | Nash Rawiller | 1 | 56.5 | |
2 | Zou Tiger | John O'Shea & Tom Charlton | Brenton Avdulla | 7 | 56.5 | |
3 | Matcha Latte | Sara Ryan | Tom Sherry | 5 | 56.5 |
In The Yard
Interesting bunch of 3YOs. Kiwi visitor PIER unsettled and unfocused in the yard, starting to get warm around the flanks. OSIPENKO and ZOU TIGER have both shown good improvement between their first and second-up runs. No knocks on AFT CABIN who parades in good order. MATCHA LATTE and WILLIAMSBURG both parade fine with small improvements to come.
In The Running
COMMUNIST jumped well enough to take the lead with ZOU TIGER moving up on his outside. AFT CABIN slow to jump and he took a long time to work across and take the position outside the lead. OSIPENKO (4th rails WC) in a good spot trailing.
The Result
OSIPENKO (1st) drove hard up the inside to narrowly get the better of ZOU TIGER (2nd) and MATCHA LATTE (3rd) chasing hard only 0.36L away from the winner.
The Interest
AFT CABIN given a torrid run after he was surprisingly slow to begin and was made to work by ZOU TIGER, but perhaps he was still a touch disappointing considering he was run down by WILLIAMSBURG, a horse he had beaten by almost 6L first-up. ZOU TIGER and OSIPENKO both improved noticeably in the yard from their first-up runs and there was only hairs breadth (and some Nash Rawiller muscle) between them at the finish. MATCHA LATTE and WILLIAMSBURG (held up) ran well too. The Randwick Guineas market rightfully opened up after this.
Race 9 CHANDON HANDICAP

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Zeyrek | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Jason Collett | 7 | 58.0 | |
2 | Cross Talk | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 2 | 59.0 | |
3 | Cuban Royale | Robert & Luke Price | Brock Ryan | 4 | 57.5 |
In The Yard
CROSS TALK very fit first-up, walking right out, bright. BULLFINCH bright in the yard and holding condition deep into his preparation, as does CUBAN ROYALE and SUPERIUM who parade well. LACKEEN and LAURE ME IN appear as though they will improve with the run under their belt, just starting to get warm at the end of the parade.
In The Running
CROSS TALK took up the running and kicked for home early (STEADY tempo : LONG SPRINT) from BULLFINCH on his outside and LACKEEN in the box seat. ZEYREK (5th rails WC) settled midfield on the inside.
The Result
ZEYREK (1st) picked up and charged late up the inside from CROSS TALK (2nd) and CUBAN ROYALE (3rd) running on.
The Interest
ZEYREK is a stayer that has always shown a bit of zip fresh, so much so that he took on the G1 Memsie Stakes first-up last campaign. He found this much easier today and won with some style following a perfect Jason Collett ride up the inside. CROSS TALK probably a better horse on wet tracks so don't give up on him yet. LACKEEN had every chance and might improve with the run.
Race 10 CLEANAWAY HANDICAP

Bias:

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Andermatt | James Cummings | Zac Lloyd | 5 | 59.5 | |
2 | Midwest | Anthony & Sam Freedman | Tim Clark | 3 | 57.5 | |
3 | Quick Tempo | Mark Minervini | Ms Rachel King | 10 | 53.5 |
In The Yard
Most parading well in the last, MIDWEST and FORZANINI very well in the yard, holding good condition and handling the heat well. KOTE and QUICK TEMPO both anxious in the yard, a normal parade for KOTE but a concern for QUICK TEMPO. FLYING CRAZY and SHELBY SIXTYSIX appear as though they will need the run first-up. HANDLE THE TRUTH and KISS SUM not far off first-up. No knocks on ANDERMATT.
In The Running
MIDWEST flew the barriers and led, but KOTE moved up and put the pressure on. FORZANINI in the box seat and ANDERMATT midfield (5th 2W WC),
The Result
ANDERMATT (1st) swept past for an easy win. MIDWEST (2nd) hung on well and QUICK TEMPO (3rd) ran on late to grab FORZANINI (4th) for a place.
The Interest
KOTE is a bit of a wild thing and he did race favourite MIDWEST no favours here when he moved up and attacked for the lead mid-race. In the end MIDWEST ran well for 2nd considering KOTE tailed off in the finish, perhaps it would have been better if jockey Tim Clark allowed KOTE to take the lead rather than using up petrol before the home straight. ANDERMATT well ridden and ran on strongly to get the prize. QUICK TEMPO unsettled in the warm weather before putting in another strong effort. FORZANINI beaten for 3rd in a photo before being sent to Randwick Equine with a laceration that needed treating. The result completed a tough day out for Tim Clark after MARIAMIA ($1.8 fav), AFT CABIN ($1.6 fav) and CROSS TALK ($1.85 fav) had been beaten earlier.
