Yard to the Post | Rosehill Gardens
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 16 January 2021
An exciting two-year-old kicked off the afternoon in style at Rosehill Gardens today, Snitzel colt REMARQUE (picture) getting the job done despite racing greenly and showing he still has a few things to learn.
Jo Pride's winner of the last race PRIVATE EYE is at the other end of the spectrum when it comes to professionalism. The son of Al Maher once again executed perfectly to make it four wins in a row.
In other races HARPO MARX ran down a gallant VADIYANN in the final strides of the staying event and the reliable ABOVE AND BEYOND scored a much-deserved win in Race 6.
A review of the day is provided below.

2 | Zethus | Stephen Brown | Ms Rachel King | 10 | 58.0 | |
3 | Sing A Love Song | Sara Ryan | Robbie Dolan | 7 | 58.0 |
The Interest
REMARQUE was dominant here, an impressive horse. The time was just over a second behind BM 75-80 level with a slightly steadier tempo so you could rate him around 65 (against older horses).
Race 2 SKY RACING ACTIVE HANDICAP
fair tempo

2 | Lashes | Matthew Smith | Tommy Berry | 2 | 55.0 | |
3 | Academy | Mark Newnham | Joshua Parr | 6 | 59.0 |
The Interest
TAILLEUR is such a professional mare and she seems to have run to her mark here. THE BOPPER (4th 4L) disappointing, he doesn't seem to be at his best on firm ground now he is up in grade, quite an athletic sprinter with less muscle bulk than most. A STANDARD rating race.

2 | Vadiyann | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Sam Clipperton | 5 | 60.5 | |
3 | First Courrier | Robert & Luke Price | Ms Kathy O'Hara | 4 | 52.5 |
The Interest
VADIYANN really rolled along and was very tough, only a classy ride from Rachel King on HARPO MARX stopping him. There could be more upside to come from the top two. A STANDARD rating race.
Race 5 SCHWEPPES HANDICAP
steady tempo
Bias:

Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Count De Rupee | Robert & Luke Price | Ms Kathy O'Hara | 2 | 52.0 | |
2 | Liberty Sun | Gregory McFarlane | Tim Clark | 3 | 55.5 | |
3 | Charretera | Peter & Paul Snowden | Tommy Berry | 10 | 57.5 |
The Interest
COUNT DE RUPEE came from a strong form race and got the job done, but only just. HE'S A HOTSHOT (7th 2.4L) unlucky out wide, CHARRETERA (3rd 0.9L) very strong from the back and STARSPANGLED RODEO (5th 1.9L) made ground from an almost hopeless position. The overall time seems a touch BELOW STANDARD, but don't let that stop you from following some of the better runs in the race.
Race 6 TAB HANDICAP
fair tempo
: long sprint
Bias:

Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Above And Beyond | Gary Portelli | Robbie Dolan | 8 | 54.0 | |
2 | Canasta | Bjorn Baker | Joshua Parr | 4 | 58.0 | |
3 | Zoffany's Lad | Grant Allard | Ms Rachel King | 1 | 57.5 |
The Interest
CANASTA well-backed and just went a bit quick in the lead, a decent effort to hold on for 2nd in the end. ABOVE AND BEYOND had been racing consistently and everything fell into place for him here. It looks like a pretty STANDARD BM 78 based on time and form, but it could be below standard on review later given there wasn't much depth in the race.
Race 7 RANVET HANDICAP
steady tempo
: long sprint
Bias:
Fair
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Tycoonist | Emma Fouchard | Kerrin McEvoy | 8 | 54.0 | |
2 | Blaze A Trail | Ciaron Maher | Ms Rachel King | 7 | 57.0 | |
3 | Sahra | Peter & Paul Snowden | Ms Winona Costin | 2 | 53.0 |
The Interest
The leader RABBIT CLAUSE got an easy couple of sections mid-race before kicking for home just a touch too early (last three sections 10.93, 11.12 and a tiring 12.06). TYCOONIST got the job done from the right spot near pace. BLAZE A TRAIL (2nd 0.8L) with a nice return making ground and BLUFF'N'BLUSTER (7th 2.3L) really hit the line late too. A hard race to rate given tempo, but a bunched finish suggests it could be BELOW STANDARD.
Race 8 IRON JACK HANDICAP
steady tempo
Bias:
Fair
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Lillemor | John O'Shea & Tom Charlton | Ms Louise Day | 9 | 58.5 | |
2 | Exotic Ruby | Bjorn Baker | Regan Bayliss | 1 | 54.0 | |
3 | Madam Legend | Les Bridge | Ms Cejay Graham | 11 | 60.5 |
The Interest
LILLEMOR got control at a STEADY to FAIR tempo and proved too strong, EXOTIC RUBY making a good return after getting the box seat run. BRAZEN GEM (6th 2.1L, held up slightly) was a touch unlucky and NEVER TALK (5th 2L) found the line from the back. The time not too bad so starting with a STANDARD rating for the race.
Race 9 ROSEHILL BOWLING CLUB HANDICAP
fair tempo
: long sprint
Bias:

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Private Eye | Joseph Pride | Regan Bayliss | 4 | 56.5 | |
2 | Starla | Chris Waller | Jason Collett | 15 | 57.0 | |
3 | Cuban Royale | Robert & Luke Price | Jay Ford | 12 | 57.5 |
The Interest
PRIVATE EYE dropped into the right spot here midfield and when the tempo was on he was always going to be hard to hold out late. He's a promising type that should have even more to give over the mile. Form stamped by CATAPULT (5th 2.4L) winning at midweek level. The time OK and both STARLA and CUBAN ROYALE are well-exposed so the race is rated STANDARD initially.
