Yard to the Post @ Royal Randwick

Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 11 July 2015

An unassuming Winter card at Royal Randwick saw two potential Spring stars take the next step.

Garry Frazer's sprinter WAY WE GO toyed with his rivals in the All Too Hard @ Vinery Handicap over 1,100 metres, leaving an excited trainer to state he simply "doesn't know how good he is."

Later in the day, Vandyke's classic-looking stayer ASTRONOMOS wasn't quite so dominant in the Tab.com.au Handicap, only just arriving to win in the final bounds. There is more improvement to come for this son of New Approach though, he'll be given a break and set for the Group One 'The Metropolitan' over 2,400 metres in the Spring.

Moody had a great strike rate with a small team he brought north, winning Races 1 and 3 in easy fashion with mudlarks KENJORWOOD and NOELA'S CHOICE.

Overall the track played well, a genuine HEAVY surface with gallopers OFF RAILS preferred as usual.

A full yard to the post review will be on-line Sunday at 9am.

1 Kenjorwood Darren Weir Regan Bayliss 4 59.0
2 Pajaro Peter & Paul Snowden Thomas Huet 3 54.5
3 Eigelstein Chris Waller Tye Angland 2 56.5

Kenjorwood was way too good despite racing greenly

In The Yard

KENJORWOOD looked well and enough power for 1600m, he stepped back in distance today. All five horses paraded OK though.

In The Running

KEEP COOL took up the running and set a FAIR TEMPO (just on the steadier side) and EIGELSTEIN moved up on his outside. PAJARO was slow and got back.

The Result

KENJORWOOD (1st) veered out on the turn, and in the straight, but he still surged past from PAJARO (2nd), who ran on steadily to beat EIGELSTEIN (3rd).

The Interest

It looked like there were only three horses in the race, but really there was only one. The form through PAJARO's last start win was a bit shaky and EIGELSTEIN hasn't won for a long time. The Victorian visitor KENJORWOOD was way too good despite not handing the Sydney way of going. Follow KENJORWOOD.

Race 2 TAB REWARDS HANDICAP

A tough filly beats up on the boys

fair tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Kimberley Star Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Blake Shinn 7 56.5
2 Intrepid Way Amanda Turner Ms Winona Costin 9 58.0
3 Fulfilled Promise James Cummings Tim Clark 8 55.0

Kimberley Star out-stayed her rivals in the wet

In The Yard

MR DARCY good scope, top chances all looked well though. STALWART shine to coat, FASHION SNIPTZ athletic and likes the wet.

In The Running

MULTITUDE strode up out wider and took the lead at a FAIR TEMPO, from FULFILLED PROMISE. KIMBERLEY STAR strode up wider with no cover. FASHION SNIPTZ got well back and INTREPID way settled last.

The Result

KIMBERLEY STAR (1st) strode up and surged clear, from INTREPID WAY (2nd), who ran on well. FULFILLED PROMISE stuck on (3rd) and FASHION SNIPTZ (4th) ran on late.

The Interest

Waterhouse's filly KIMBERLEY STAR jumped in the ratings winning her Maiden over 1300m and she showed just how much toughness and stamina she has with another big win. The form-line of INTREPID WAY and ELECTRIC TRIBUTE (5th) stacked up OK, while FASHION SNIPTZ flashed late again - they all have good promise. MR DARCY might enjoy a drier track and more racing room, he was stuck on the inside in the worst ground. As for the disappointing STALWART, he hasn't quite worked out what it's all about yet. Follow KIMBERLEY STAR.

Race 3 TAB PLACE MULTI HANDICAP

Moody bags an early double

strong tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Noela's Choice Darren Weir Regan Bayliss 2 58.0
2 I'm in the Money Jeff Englebrecht Tommy Berry 9 58.5
3 Orion Love Louis Baudron Koby Jennings 7 60.5

Noela's Choice stormed down the middle of the track

In The Yard

HULA LUA a staying type, might need time/further. BERRIMILLA OK and NOELA'S CHOICE looked fine. No standouts

In The Running

I'M IN THE MONEY strode forward to lead, from MARDI on her outside, and they rolled along at a STRONG TEMPO. ORION LOVE was four lengths behind and MISS HUFFLEPUFF led up the pack. BERRIMILLA was a bit slow and got back.

The Result

I'M IN THE MONEY (2nd) sustained a strong effort, but NOELA'S CHOICE (1st) chased hard down the middle and got there. ORION LOVE (3rd) stayed on nearer the inside.

The Interest

Another one for Moody! NOELA'S CHOICE loves the wet and she loved the STRONG TEMPO even more... I'M IN THE MONEY is racing very gamely and can be followed next time, along with the next two horses ORION LOVE (better up to 1800m next time) and MISS HUFFLEPUFF (ready for further now). BERRIMILLA couldn't quite sustain her run like she usually does up to 1600m. Follow NOELA'S CHOICE, I'M IN THE MONEY and ORION LOVE.

Race 4 RUBEN GUTHRIE IN CINEMAS JULY 16 HANDICAP

Cummings stamina makes the difference

fair tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Skyline Blush Anthony Cummings Brenton Avdulla 8 55.5
2 Got You Double Ciaron Maher Blake Shinn 6 57.5
3 Montrer Dame Paul Perry Thomas Huet 3 54.0

Skyline Blush kept lifting to beat Got You Double

In The Yard

GOT YOU DOUBLE well, not obvious 2000m type with some strength, similar to HIGH ABOVE. DRUM ROLL nice scope and MONTRER DAME ready for 2000m, more efficient.

In The Running

SIRIUS SPY pushed up the inside and set a FAIR TEMPO, from HIGH ABOVE, KISEKI DANE and SKYLINE BLUSH.

The Result

SKYLINE BLUSH (1st) loomed up on the turn and kept lifting, holding off the run of GOT YOU DOUBLE (2nd), who got the trail on her back. MONTRER DAME (3rd) made good late ground.

The Interest

The top two put a good gap on them and perhaps KISEKI DANE wasn't particularly well ridden by young Jennings this time (lost momentum at key point). Moody almost made it three in a row with GOT YOU DOUBLE, he just couldn't get past SKYINE BLUSH, who showed great stamina. MONTRER DAME does what she does (long time between wins) and DRUM ROLL was very plain out wider. Follow SKYLINE BLUSH and GOT YOU DOUBLE.

Race 5 ALL TOO HARD @ VINERY HANDICAP

Big excitement for the Frazer clan

fair tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Way We Go Garry Frazer Ms Claire Nutman 9 54.5
2 Reigning Meteor Matthew Smith Damien Thornton 12 55.0
3 Momma's Snitzel Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou Ms Jess Taylor 11 54.0

Way We Go was very impressive, winning easily

In The Yard

FELINES, WAY WE GO and MOMMA'S SNITZEL looked well, REIGNING METEOR suited to wet (athletic). INZ'N'OUT and ORUJO fit enough fresh.

In The Running

MOMMA'S SNITZEL showed the most speed to lead from MINNESOTA at a good genuine FAIR TEMPO. INZ'N'OUT and STOP THE PRESS were just behind them and WAY WE GO moved up out wider racing a touch keenly.

The Result

MOMMA'S SNITZEL came wider and sustained her speed, but couldn't hold out WAY WE GO (1st), who simply strode past down the middle of the track. REIGNING METEOR (2nd) wound up from the back.

The Interest

Wow....! It looks like we could have a good one here. The stable was confident, the money came and the result was easy. Nutman kept WAY WE GO out of trouble out wide, he is grades above these. Good news for the Frazer family, trainer Garry's son dates the jockey... The runs of REIGNING METEOR (got a long way back, enjoyed the wet), MOMMA' SNITZEL, INZ'N'OUT and DUPE 'EM (had to come up the inside) were all pass marks. ORUJO and FELINES will improve onto a drier track. MINNESOTA looked lean in the yard, a concern for this prep. Follow WAY WE GO.

Race 6 THE MICK 'CRUSHER' KERR MEMORIAL HANDICAP

Berry and Hawkes hit form late in the day

steady tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Idance Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Tommy Berry 2 55.5
2 Lunar Rise John Sargent Jason Collett 7 57.0
3 Kristy Lee Chris Waller Tye Angland 11 59.0

Idance cruised up and was too strong

In The Yard

All horses ok in the yard, COOLRING only small with big weight. ALIAS and LUNAR RISE powerful, QUEEN OF KARIBA well, IDANCE better suited here at Randwick.

In The Running

LUNAR RISE was urged to the lead and controlled a STEADY TEMPO, from COOLRING and IDANCE, who moved up out wider. QUEEN OF KARIBA was 2L slow and went back.

The Result

LUNAR RISE (2nd) and IDANCE (1st) came away from the pack, the latter fighting on best over the last 200m. KRISTY LEE (3rd) ran on from the back.

The Interest

LUNAR RISE (God's In Him form) and IDANCE (much better suited to 1300m at Randwick) both dominated the race, IDANCE racing in peak form with more to give next start. KRISTY LEE, HAPPY CLAPPER and QUEEN OF KARIBA were three horses in the market that all got back off a STEADY TEMPO, Waller's mare KRISTY LEE a more powerful type that was able to make up ground. HAPPY CLAPPER (warmed up, stuck to inside) was easily good enough to follow up on next start. QUEEN OF KARIBA got too far back, but she still only managed 6th. Follow IDANCE and HAPPY CLAPPER.

Race 7 TAB.COM.AU HANDICAP

Vandyke sets a bold Sprint target

fair tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Astronomos John Thompson Jason Collett 1 56.5
2 Dure Mick Smith Ms Kathy O'Hara 9 54.0
3 Campania Garry Frazer Kerrin McEvoy 3 55.0

Astronomos was just too classy over the last 100m

In The Yard

ASTRONOMOS classy staying type in the yard, most others OK, including LOOPHOLE, ZAYAM and DURE, who were all very fit.

In The Running

ZAYAM pushed forward and controlled the race at a FAIR TEMPO from CAMPANIA on his outside. LET ME HANDLE IT strode up three wide with no cover. ASTRONOMOS settled in midfield.

The Result

A close finish. ZAYAM (4th) got rolling on the turn, but CAMPANIA (3rd) ground him down. ASTRONOMOS (1st) wound up and only just got there late and DURE (2nd) ran on down the outside.

The Interest

Vandyke was happy enough with the win, even though it was "just in time". The word is he'll head towards the Group One Metropolitan, a bold aim, you can bet DURE won't be there! The placegetters are racing very gamely, as is CASINO DANCER, who can show up back to around 1600m to 1800m next time - who knows why the trainer persists with racing her over this distance, she simply doesn't get it! Follow ASTRONOMOS (up in distance).

Race 8 BLEDISLOE CUP FESTIVAL HANDICAP

One big swoop sinks the favourite

fair tempo
Bias: off-rails

Place Silk Horse Trainer Jockey Gate Kgs
1 Darciwood Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes Tommy Berry 15 57.0
2 Wonderbolt Barbara Joseph, Paul & Matt Jones Josh Cartwright 7 57.5
3 Il Mio Destino Kim Waugh Ms Jess Taylor 17 54.5

Darciwood stormed home while favourite Fell Swoop couldn't find space

In The Yard

FELL SWOOP compact, ready to run and ALLEZ CHIVAL fit in the yard WONDERBOLT one of the most powerful, suited to 1000m, while SELECTIFY is a taller type that might need further.

In The Running

IL MIO DESTINO jumped well and came across to lead out wider at a genuine FAIR TEMPO. FLORAL INSIGHT and ALLEZ CHIVAL kicked up the inside. DESTINY RISING couldn't get across and raced keenly out wider. COSMIC CAMEO and SELECTIFY were very wide. FELL SWOOP was blocked for a run in the early part of the straight.

The Result

DARCIWOOD (1st) swept down the outside from last. WONDERBOLT (2nd) sprinted from the pack and IL MIO DESTINO (3rd) hung on in front of FELL SWOOP (4th), who closed late after finding clear running room.

The Interest

Forgive SELECTIFY, you won't see a wider run in 50 years of watching racing! The three best horses in the race looked like DARCIWOOD, WONDERBOLT and FELL SWOOP, the latter having no luck, he could have gone very close. DARCIWOOD had trialled well and he loves racing fresh, the question is whether he can sustain his form now. A promising run from IL MIO DESTINO, she will get better over 1200m and further. FLORAL INSIGHT was OK given he was in the wrong spot. Follow WONDERBOLT and FELL SWOOP. Forgive FELL SWOOP and SELECTIFY.
