Yard to the Post @ Rosehill Gardens
Race Day: Rosehill Gardens on Saturday, 01 August 2015
Opportunity knocked for the Jim and Greg Lee stable in an off-season card at Rosehill Gardens.
The feature Listed Winter Challenge over 1,500 metres was there for the taking and the unheralded son of Keeper KEEPIT TO YOURSELF (picture) strode clear thanks to a strong ride by Tommy Berry.
Waller's trio of RUGGED CROSS, YOU'LL NEVER and EIGELSTEIN all had queries on their chances, consistent form pushing them up in the weights, while the Snowden stable's one-paced GREAT ESTEEM (runner up) was also favoured in the market. None of them could match the finishing surge from the winner in the end, Berry putting the race away with vigorous riding over the final furlong.
The best win of the day came from Canberra sprinter FELL SWOOP, who delivered on his promise with an easy victory over 1,100 metres. It seemed Lady Luck balanced out the equation, his main threat ONEROUS getting blocked for a run, just as he was first-up from a spell.
In other races, promising three-year-olds JAPONISME and KIMBERLEY STAR strode to big wins in the opening two races for the Waller and Waterhouse stables.
A full yard to the post review will be on-line Sunday at 9am.

1 | Japonisme | Chris Waller | Nash Rawiller | 5 | 59.0 | |
2 | Tempt Me Not | James Cummings | Glyn Schofield | 6 | 54.0 | |
3 | Zoutenant | Gary Portelli | Blake Shinn | 2 | 57.0 |
Japonisme put a big gap on his rivals
In The Yard
Ryan's SHACKED UP stood out, powerful and very relaxed. ZOUTENANT and CHEEKY BABE both looked well, but a bit keen, CHEEKY BABE sweating up noticably. JAPONISME and TEMPT ME NOT both looked OK, BEAU HOFFA clearly a level below.
In The Running
SHACKED UP led from JAPONISME and set an honest FAIR TEMPO. TEMPT ME NOT raced a bit keenly, as she often does.
The Result
JAPONISME (1st) was patiently ridden to the turn and strode clear in the straight, from TEMPT ME NOT (2nd), who sprinted up but couldn't finish off. ZOUTENANT (3rd) made some ground.
The Interest
JAPONISME has gone to a new level his last couple of runs, winning very impressively here. He's a 3yo (horses birthday today) that could succeed in the early part of the Spring. TEMPT ME NOT does what she does, sprints well but often lacks the winning finish. At least she enjoyed clear galloping room this time (...she hates being in the pack). SHACKED UP didn't seem to stay the 1100m after racing keenly, perhaps back to 1000m now (in easier class). CHEEKY BABE just wasn't herself today. Follow JAPONISME.
Race 2 STRUCTAFLOR YELLOWTONGUE PLATE

1 | Kimberley Star | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Blake Shinn | 8 | 56.0 | |
2 | More Than Fabulous | David Payne | Glyn Schofield | 3 | 55.0 | |
3 | Man of Choice | Brad Widdup | Sam Clipperton | 7 | 55.5 |
Kimberley Star strode away from the pack
In The Yard
Not many knocks in the yard, KIMBLERLEY STAR is robust / looked good. LAND'S END (strong, dry track could suit), WUDANG MOUNTAIN, MORE THAN FABULOUS and SELF ESTEEM all looked well. PRINCE ROO and EXIT ONLY lack the power of the classier horses.
In The Running
PRINCE ROO and SELF ESTEEM came across and set a FAIR TEMPO, without much pressure. MAN OF CHOICE was slow to jump and got back.
The Result
KIMBLERLEY STAR (1st) moved up and strode right away. MORE THAN FABULOUS (2nd), MAN OF CHOICE (3rd) and WUDANG MOUNTAIN (4th) fought on in a close finish a couple of lengths back.
The Interest
The filly KIMBLERLEY STAR was much too strong for the boys, that's three wins from three at 1300m+ now. The form-line of MAN OF CHOICE and MORE THAN FABULOUS held up for a place, but LAND’S END disappointed in 5th. He's a big immature colt that didn't have his mind on the job today. WUDANG MOUNTAIN was a bit unlucky and probably should have got 2nd. Follow KIMBLERLEY STAR.
Race 3 HUME DOORS & TIMBER HANDICAP

2 | Sense And Reason | Robert & Luke Price | Glyn Schofield | 7 | 59.0 | |
3 | Footy Fan | Wade Slinkard | Ms Claire Nutman | 1 | 56.0 |
Berrimilla was at her very best today
In The Yard
Hard to knock the mares, MARDI and AEROBAR both tough on-pace types looked well. BERRIMILLA had a nice shine to her coat, and very fit
In The Running
FOOTY FAN took up the lead from AEROBAR and only set a STEADY TEMPO, with QUEEN OF SHEBA out wider. NISROC over-raced at times. FOOTY FAN gave a kick on the turn.
The Result
BERRIMILLA (1st) worked into the clear and was too strong late, from SENSE AND REASON (2nd), who sprinted down the outside to catch FOOTY FAN (3rd).
The Interest
BERRIMILLA looked well in the yard, was well-backed and delivered, despite not getting the clearest of passages. She can sustain a really strong surge and was way too good on the line. Not much between the rest, "ToF" (turn-of-foot) making a big difference off the STEADY speed. COMMANDING WIT, MARDI and AEROBAR can do better with a genuine tempo, the three of them all struggled as the sprint went on. It's surprising none of their jockeys took the initiative and pushed on to make the tempo themselves, all horses that can take up the running. Follow BERRIMILLA.
Race 4 THE BISLEY WORKWEAR CONTEST

1 | Campania | Garry Frazer | Kerrin McEvoy | 9 | 54.0 | |
2 | Zayam | Matthew Smith | Danny Beasley | 10 | 54.0 | |
3 | Artibai | Kris Lees | Brenton Avdulla | 3 | 54.0 |
Campania fought on to grab a close win
In The Yard
Most horses looked well again; MARENOSTRO and ZAYAM are nice types. ARTIBAI looked small and neat, fit and ready to go. GHOST PROTOCOL and CAMPANIA both touch one-paced, want a genuine tempo.
In The Running
ZAYAM took up the running from COLLAR, who put the pressure on mid-race, setting a genuine FAIR TEMPO overall. MARENOSTRO tracked up behind the pace with CAMPANIA on the rails.
The Result
ZAYAM (2nd) kept kicking, but CAMPANIA (1st) gradually wore him down. ARTIBAI (3rd), MARENOSTRO (4th) and LOOPHOLE (5th) were all close up.
The Interest
A clump of solid off-season gallopers, but no world beaters here. MARENOSTRO just couldn't keep his run going with more weight and up to 1900m. ZAYAM was the best run in the race, a nice type that could be worth following. GHOST PROTOCOL is very dour, he's going to find it hard to win again soon. Follow ZAYAM.
Race 5 UNBREAKABLE HILUX JOCKEY CELEBRATION DAY HANDICAP
A tough gelding gets the job done

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Countryman | Michael Kent | James McDonald | 8 | 56.5 | |
2 | Turbulent Jet | Lee & Cherie Curtis | Ms Winona Costin | 6 | 54.0 | |
3 | Adorabeel | Joseph Pride | Sam Clipperton | 5 | 56.5 |
Countryman produced a strong effort to win
In The Yard
A short parade, FINE BUBBLES, IDANCE and COUNTRYMAN looked well. ADORABEEL, touch of class still improvement to come, same as CENTRE PIVOT. The big-striding TURBULENT JET looked OK.
In The Running
HOWMUCHDOYOULOVEME led from COUNTRYMAN and got them rolling at a STRONG TEMPO from mid-race. Early in the event, James McDonald came across too early on COUNTRYMAN, resulting in COOLRING getting on to heels and IDANCE striking interference behind.
The Result
COUNTRYMAN (1st) took over and was strong to the line, beating home TURBULENT JET (2nd), who wound up strongly late. ADORABEEL (3rd) ran on, hanging a bit down the straight.
The Interest
Good margins suggest the form will stack up for COUNTRYMAN and TURBULENT JET, at Rosehill at least. Expect ADORABEEL to take great improvement. Both COOLRING and IDANCE suffered interference and returned to the stalls with some Vet issues, COOLRING with a poor recovery and coughing and IDANCE had quartered it's off fore-heel. James McDonald copped a week suspension for his misdemeanour. CENTRE PIVOT was only average. Follow ADORABEEL, COUNTRYMAN and TURBULENT JET. Forgive IDANCE and COOLRING.
Race 6 THE PASLODE WINTER CHALLENGE
Tommy Berry makes the difference
steady tempo
Bias:

Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Keepit to Yourself | Jim & Greg Lee | Tommy Berry | 6 | 54.0 | |
2 | Great Esteem | Stuart Webb | Tim Clark | 4 | 54.0 | |
3 | Rugged Cross | Darren Weir | Brenton Avdulla | 2 | 58.0 |
Keepit To Yourself was well-ridden to win
In The Yard
NOELA'S CHOICE was the best in the yard, but might want it wetter, a lean and muscular type. Waller's pair RUGGED CROSS (smaller, can sprint) and YOU'LL NEVER both looked well. GREAT ESTEEM and KEEPIT TO YOURSELF both looked OK, but touch 'one-paced'.
In The Running
SPURTONIC took up the running from GREAT ESTEEM and set a STEADY TEMPO early before striding out mid-race.
The Result
KEEPIT TO YOURSELF (1st) pulled out early and sustained his run to win from GREAT ESTEEM (2nd), who held the lead briefly. RUGGED CROSS (3rd) challenged nearer the inside.
The Interest
A brilliant ride from Tommy Berry to get this tough galloper into the race early and use his long sustained run to good effect. Both GREAT ESTEEM and KEEPIT TO YOURSELF raced each other last week and the form stacked up. The run of YOU’LL NEVER was admirable seeing he got so far back off a STEADY TEMPO, but without much tempo in the race, there was a big chance that would happen. No Follows or Forgives.
Race 7 SELLEYS HANDICAP
A swooping finish from a promising type
strong tempo
Bias:

1 | Fell Swoop | Matthew Dale | Blake Shinn | 11 | 58.0 | |
2 | Inz'n'out | Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou | Brenton Avdulla | 6 | 59.0 | |
3 | Bold Circle | David Payne | Serg Lisnyy | 4 | 58.0 |
Fell Swoop dashed clear down the outside
In The Yard
FELL SWOOP was on his toes and ready to go, a muscular type. ORUJO big strong and powerful and ONEROUS fit enough first-up. SENTA DE NOCHE and INZ'N'OUT were the other two gallopers that stood out in the yard.
In The Running
Lots of early pressure, ORUJO and SENTA DE NOCHE pushed on wide out and ensured a STRONG TEMPO, from LION COUCHANT and VALID CONTRACT nearer the inside.
The Result
FELL SWOOP (1st) swept down the outside and put a big margin on INZ'N'OUT (2nd) and BOLD CIRCLE (3rd).
The Interest
FELL SWOOP was unlucky first-up, but Lady Luck turned the tables this time. ORUJO was stuck wide with SENTA DE NOCHE and ONEROUS was blocked for a run, along with a whole bunch of others (DUPE 'EM, TERRA AMATA and PRO CONSUL). The winner was very impressive though. INZ'N'OUT and BOLD CIRCLE will be better over 1200m+ next time. Follow FELL SWOOP. Forgive ORUJO, SENTA DE NOCHE, ONEROUS, DUPE 'EM, TERRA AMATA and PRO CONSUL
Race 8 WEATHERTEX HANDICAP
Too much class in the last
steady tempo
Bias:

Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |

1 | Golden Falls | Kelly Schweida | Tommy Berry | 6 | 55.5 | |
2 | Grande Punto | Allan Denham | Koby Jennings | 8 | 59.5 | |
3 | Careless | Mark Newnham | James McDonald | 11 | 59.5 |
Golden Falls was simply too good for her rivals
In The Yard
The Queensland raider GOLDEN FALLS looked fine in the yard, 1400m suits. CARELESS and SMART MOOCHI both looked well too, neat, compact.
In The Running
CARELESS came across and set a STEADY TEMPO, from DANCE OF HEROES on his outside. GRAND PUNTO over-raced so strode up wider mid-race. VITE LONI didn't find much room in the straight.
The Result
GRAND PUNTO (2nd) took over, but GOLDEN FALLS (1st) surged clear late. CARELESS (3rd) stuck on fairly on the inside.
The Interest
A promising and progressive 4yo that was simply too classy for these, late season 3yos and early season 4yos often get in 'cheaply' on the benchmark system once they leave open racing against their own age-group. GRANDE PUNTO was much better this time (...why did he lead last time over 1500m?) and CARELESS was only OK. VITE LONI is one to follow too, he didn't have much luck and is probably better suited away from Rosehill. Follow GOLDEN FALLS and VITE LONI.
