Yard to the Post | Epsom Day
Race Day: Royal Randwick on Saturday, 05 October 2019

Overnight rain dampened the turf at Royal Randwick today, but that didn't stop Chris Waller's all-conquering stable from lighting up the track with six of the nine winners.
All three Group 1s went to the champion trainer, KOLDING (picture) holding off a fast-finishing TE AKAU SHARK in the feature Epsom mile, FUNSTAR kicking clear in the Flight Stakes and COME PLAY WITH ME fighting hard in the Metropolitan over 2,400 metres. GLOBAL QUEST (Group 3 Breeders' Plate), VERRY ELLEEGANT (Group 2 Hill Stakes) and DEALMAKER all won too, making it a stunning day at Royal Randwick for the stable.
And if that wasn't enough, Waller also managed to quinella the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington, both KINGS WILL DREAM and FINCHE surging clear to fight out the finish.
In other Sydney races, flying two-year-old filly EVERY ROSE led all the way in the Group 3 Gimcrack Stakes and the Snowden stable trained the first two home in the last.
A full review will be on-line Tuesday 6pm due to public holiday.

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Every Rose | Mark Newnham | Joshua Parr | 2 | 56.0 | |
2 | Stellar Pauline | Peter & Paul Snowden | Kerrin McEvoy | 6 | 56.0 | |
3 | Ticket To Ride | Michael Freedman | Tommy Berry | 8 | 56.0 |
In The Yard
Most looking well in the cool conditions, especially STELLAR PAULINE, strong and relaxed. EVERY ROSE, FALL ON A STAR, ORPHEUM, ROSE SAUVAGE and TICKET TO RIDE parade well too. IN FLANDERS and UNDENIABLE plain types in comparison. SUPER ONE SUSIE quite muscular and carries weight.
In The Running
EVERY ROSE took up the running and set a STRONG tempo. MISS JAY FOX on her outside and ASHRA JAHRE out 3W NC. IN FLANDERS ducked in for cover 3W behind them and checked STELLAR PAULINE in the process. UNDENIABLE racing keenly out 4W NC near the back.
The Result
EVERY ROSE (1st) kept going and held on from STELLAR PAULINE (2nd 1.3L) and TICKET TO RIDE (3rd 1.6L) running on well. ORPHEUM (4th 2.6L) ran on after getting held up.
The Interest
Some nice fillies going forward, a few of these looked like stars in the yard and they performed well. STELLAR PAULINE copped a check at a key moment and is worth following, a very nicely-built daughter of Not A Single Doubt. ORPHEUM still learning and has upside too.
Race 2 ARROWFIELD BREEDERS' PLATE
Waller class rises to the top late

2 | Postcode | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Tim Clark | 1 | 56.0 | |
3 | Beyliks | James Cummings | Hugh Bowman | 9 | 56.0 |
In The Yard
BARBARIC and BEYLIKS parade well, a nice balance of strength and athleticism. BAY OF BENGAL a compact type in shape and on his toes. GLOBAL QUEST nicely-balanced, sculpted and quite solid. POSTCODE more of a robust type. CIRCULARITY noticeably anxious. LAMELO and NITROUS OK, but carry a lot of muscle and condition, not ideal for a wet track.
In The Running
NITROUS sped to the lead at a STRONG tempo with CIRCULARITY on the inside and BELIEBER out 3W NC. MR COLORFUL was restrained and out 4W NC at the back.
The Result
GLOBAL QUEST (1st) surged through from near the pace for a strong win, beating home POSTCODE (2nd 1L), who fought on up the inside after being held up 'til the 200m. BEYLIKS (3rd 1.8L) and BELIEBER (4th 2L) fought on.
The Interest
They went hard in this and the two more robust types in the yard showed good strength to the line. GLOBAL QUEST oozes class and parades like a 1400m type already, while POSTCODE (from Vancouver) looks to have some of the speed from his sire and robust build of his french-bred dam, who has 2400m form (Champagne Stakes?). BELIEBER very good after racing wide on the hot speed.
Race 3 GOW GATES HANDICAP

1 | Dealmaker | Chris Waller | James McDonald | 4 | 58.0 | |
2 | Got Unders | Jay Hopkins | Glen Boss | 9 | 54.5 | |
3 | Penske | Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | Adam Hyeronimus | 2 | 60.5 |
In The Yard
Most looking as they usually do. MURAAQEB, SHOCK ALERT and IRUKANDJI all well, but a wet track is some risk for them. DEALMAKER, GREYSFUL GLAMOUR both good to go, looking in shape. MIGHTY LUCKY perhaps not quite fit yet and SUPER TYCOON anxious.
In The Running
GREYSFUL GLAMOUR went to the lead and rolled at an honest STRONG tempo.
The Result
DEALMAKER (1st) ran on up the inside and beat GOT UNDERS (2nd 0.2L) fighting on well. PENSKE (3rd 2L) held a clear 3rd from the box seat.
The Interest
DEALMAKER got the nice run and finally delivered, while GOT UNDERS relished the honest tempo on SOFT ground. GREYSFUL GLAMOUR (5th 4.5L) (went too hard), MURAAQEB (4th 4L) (prefers dry), IRUKANDJI (6th 5.8L) (prefers dry, cardiac arrhythmia) and SHOCK ALERT (9th 16.9L) (on strong tempo, struggled in conditions) all with some excuses so the form out of this race could be questionable.
Race 4 DARLEY FLIGHT STAKES
Waller's star never in doubt
slow tempo
Bias:
rails-3w
Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Funstar | Chris Waller | James McDonald | 2 | 56.0 | |
2 | Probabeel | Jamie Richards | Kerrin McEvoy | 6 | 56.0 | |
3 | Foxborough | John Sargent | Jay Ford | 1 | 56.0 |
In The Yard
The top two clearly the classiest, FUNSTAR nice balance, PROBABEEL a touch more solid. Most others looking fine, they just lack the class of the top two.
In The Running
FUNSTAR got control in the lead and PROBABEEL moved up on her outside, a touch keen early and niggled when the sprint went on. Only a SLOW tempo set up.
The Result
FUNSTAR (1st) kicked clear for an easy win. PROBABEEL (2nd 3.3L) a clear second best and a gap back to FOXBOROUGH (3rd 6.8L) and ST COVET'S SPIRIT (4th 7L) fighting it out for the final place.
The Interest
FUNSTAR never looked like losing this, her main threat PROBABEEL not quite at home in the conditions and couldn't match the brilliance of the winner on the turn. A shame PROBABEEL didn't run her race, leaving us with a pretty poor G1 feature.
Race 5 BISLEY WORKWEAR PREMIERE STAKES

1 | Brutal | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Tommy Berry | 4 | 58.5 | |
2 | Home Of The Brave | James Cummings | Glyn Schofield | 3 | 58.5 | |
3 | Classique Legend | Les Bridge | Nash Rawiller | 5 | 58.5 |
In The Yard
HOME OF THE BRAVE the fittest in the yard, GRAFF well too. Others fine, just a touch of improvement to come. BRUTAL handsome and a nice coat, some improvement to come.
In The Running
HOME OF THE BRAVE got an easy lead from BRUTAL on his outside. No early pressure, but they did tire late, evening out the overall race tempo to be FAIR (on steady side). CLASSIQUE LEGEND tracked into the race strongly.
The Result
BRUTAL (1st) fought on best from HOME OF THE BRAVE (2nd 0.4L) on his inside and CLASSIQUE LEGEND (3rd 0.9L) just peaked on his sprint late.
The Interest
BRUTAL produced an impressive return here, beating genuine high quality 1200m horses when he is probably better over 1400m to 1600m. Watch out Golden Eagle! As for CLASSIQUE LEGEND, he was given a soft ride, loomed into the race nicely and it seems he simply didn't produce the final 200m, peaking on his run (10.91 / 11.73). There's no doubt there was some improvement to come in the yard though and the SOFT was against so don't rule him out of the Everest just yet. OSBORNE BULLS (5th 2.9L) has to be forgiven pulling up 3/5 lame.
Race 6 SKY RACING ACTIVE HILL STAKES

2 | Samadoubt | Bjorn Baker | Tim Clark | 4 | 59.0 | |
3 | Life Less Ordinary | Chris Waller | Hugh Bowman | 1 | 59.0 |
In The Yard
All looked well, YOUNGSTAR robust and may be looking for more of a staying test now. ANGEL OF TRUTH a lean type, as is the athletic VERRY ELLEEGANT.
In The Running
SAMADOUBT took control at a SLOW tempo and kicked on the turn for a LONG SPRINT home. VERRY ELLEEGANT set off for a long run from the back, coming 5W NC on the turn.
The Result
VERRY ELLEEGANT (1st) kept chasing to get there late, running down SAMADOUBT (2nd 0.1L), who had given a big kick. LIFE LESS ORDINARY (3rd 0.9L) fought on from the box seat.
The Interest
This win was more dominant than the margin suggests, VERRY ELLEEGANT sustaining a long run against the pattern of the day. When most horses would have been giving up 150m from home she knuckled down and surged late. SAMADOUBT perfectly ridden by Clark and probably wins on firmer ground. YOUNGSTAR (7th 3.3L) going OK and no suited here. ANGEL OF TRUTH (8th 4.8L) lacks a turn-of-foot it seems.
Race 7 TAB EPSOM
Boss, Waller and the Randwick mile
fair tempo
Bias:

Place | Silk | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Gate | Kgs |

1 | Kolding | Chris Waller | Glen Boss | 13 | 50.5 | |
2 | Te Akau Shark | Jamie Richards | James McDonald | 16 | 54.5 | |
3 | Star of the Seas | Chris Waller | Michael Dee | 14 | 50.0 |
In The Yard
Most horses looking fit and well ready for the G1. STAR OF THE SEAS still shining in the yard. TE AKAU SHARK fit and strong. The solid DREAMFORCE a risk in the conditions. CASCADIAN a touch better in the coat this time.
In The Running
DREAMFORCE worked across to lead 2W after there was some EARLY PRESSURE. He then steadied the tempo mid-race and almost into the straight, making it a stop-start race overall and a FAIR tempo. KOLDING and STAR OF THE SEAS got near the pace and JUNIPAL was stuck 3W NC.
The Result
KOLDING (1st) loomed up on the turn and kicked home strongly, holding off a game TE AKAU SHARK (2nd 0.1L) running on out wider. STAR OF THE SEAS (3rd 3.1L) held onto a place from GEM SONG (4th 3.5L) near the inside and ROCK (5th 4.1L) winding up out wider.
The Interest
Boss, Waller, the Randwick mile. It was all meant to be as KOLDING dropped into a trailing position and the tempo surprisingly backed off mid-race. He's a classy animal with a big turn-of-foot and Boss let leash at the perfect moment to win. TE AKAU SHARK the run of the race from out wider, charging home against the pattern and putting a margin on 3rd. ROCK (5th 4.1L) and NETTOYER (6th 4.5L) could have done with more tempo from way back. FIFTY STARS (8th 5L) held up at a key moment ('til 150m) and worth forgiving.
Race 8 HEINEKEN 3 METROPOLITAN

2 | Gallic Chieftain | Archie Alexander | Tommy Berry | 15 | 55.5 | |
3 | Sir Charles Road | Lance O'Sullivan & Andrew Scott | Andrew Adkins | 9 | 53.0 |
In The Yard
Most look well in the yard, no negatives to report.
In The Running
STAMPEDE took up the running at a STEADY tempo with SIR CHARLES ROAD on his outside and WU GOK 3W NC. The leader kicked on the turn for a LONG SPRINT home.
The Result
COME PLAY WITH ME (1st) fought on well from midfield to beat home GALLIC CHIEFTAIN (2nd) running on well out wider. SIR CHARLES ROAD (3rd 0.6L) stuck on to edge out STAMPEDE (4th 0.7L) for a place. BIG DUKE (5th 1.1L) and PATRICK ERIN (6th 1.3L) running on well out wider.
The Interest
A close finish here and Avdulla have COME PLAY WITH ME a lovely ride, keeping his momentum nearer the inside and winning. GALLIC CHIEFTAIN, BIG DUKE and PATRICK ERIN perhaps the most impressive runs against the pattern out wider though. BIG DUKE hitting the line strongest posting a final 200m of 12.06 seconds after Collett just seemed to lose some momentum on the turn. ATTENTION RUN (7th 1.5L) brave, clearly a tough staying mare. HUSH WRITER (8th 2L) did well considering he prefers it dry. NEUFBOSC (13th 30L) (bad check turn, eased down) and WU GOK (11th 9.8L) (3W NC) forgive runs.
Race 9 SNITZEL SPRINT

1 | Signore Fox | Peter & Paul Snowden | James McDonald | 11 | 58.5 | |
2 | Reelem in Ruby | Peter & Paul Snowden | Andrew Adkins | 3 | 53.5 | |
3 | Outrageous | Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Tommy Berry | 10 | 54.5 |
In The Yard
HANDLE THE TRUTH the fittest of the fresh horses, looking very well. AFTER ALL THAT had a poor coat.
In The Running
STAR BOY took up the running at a FAIR tempo with IT'S SO OBVIOUS on his outside. BEAU IDEAL out 3W NC and OUTRAGEOUS out 4W NC. HANDLE THE TRUTH in the box seat and blocked 'til the 125m looking for a run. REELEM IN RUBY held up too just behind the leaders.
The Result
SIGNORE FOX (1st) ran on best from midfield to beat REELEM IN RUBY (2nd 0.2L) poking through late and a game OUTRAGEOUS (3rd 0.3L). BEAU IDEAL (4th 1.1L) and HANDLE THE TRUTH (5th 1.3L) not far away.
The Interest
No Waller runners so it was game on here! The Snowdens got the luck to win, arguably OUTRAGEOUS (stuck 4W NC) and HANDLE THE TRUTH (blocked) were better runs. REELEM IN RUBY also found some trouble and BEAU IDEAL was 3W NC himself. The improvement to come in the yard from SIGNORE FOX, OUTRAGEOUS and REELEM IN RUBY suggests they may be the horses to follow.
